10 Commandments of creativity

The Creative landscape is evolving like never before.
It’s an unprecedented time of fear, BUT also opportunity for those who understand the timeless principles of creativity.

The aim is to not survive AI but to evolve to feel free to immerse ourselves in exciting, impactful projects at the edge of possibilities.

We need to double down and supercharge our creative abilities.

That's why I wrote these 10 foundational rules – your "Creativity Cheat Code" – to help you navigate the AI Anxiety:

Focus on Your Process [Do It The Hard Way]:

Why: In a world of instant AI generation, deliberately engaging in a challenging, hands-on creative process builds resilience, deep understanding, and a unique style.

This "hard way" forges skills and insights that AI can't replicate, making your work distinctive and valuable. It's about the story of creation, not just the end product.

Honda's acclaimed "Cog" commercial showcased a two-minute chain reaction using only actual car parts. All done entirely in-camera through hundreds of takes. This deliberate choice to skip CGI resulted in a unique ad. The story of the piece became more than the work alone.

Daily Creativity Exercises:

  • Why: Creativity is a muscle. Consistent, deliberate practice. Whether it's brainstorming, freewriting, sketching, or experimenting with new tools practice strengthens your innovative thinking. AI is going to make more an more possible, so ideas and agency become more valuable. Why stop at designing the logo when you can build the whole app? That 1% inspiration is becoming more valuable than 99% perspiration (or maybe 80% AI automation and 19% perspiration )

Expand Your Creative Horizons:

  • Why: AI can help bridge skill gaps, allowing you to explore beyond your traditional expertise. Don't Just Stick to Your Comfort Zone. If you're a designer, dabble in code. If you're a writer, explore visual storytelling. Pushing your boundaries expands your creative toolkit and allows you to see connections and opportunities others might miss.

Always Be Innovating:

  • Why: AI excels at pattern recognition and executing based on existing data. Innovation is about creating something genuinely new, challenging norms, and solving problems in unprecedented ways. Humans excel at this. Your ability to innovate is your edge, pushing you to the frontiers of whats possible.

Embrace Collaboration:

  • Why: Minds collaborating brings a richness of diverse perspectives, experiences, and emotional intelligence. In the age of AI, fostering deep collaborative relationships allows for the co-creation of complex, nuanced work that resonates on a human level. AI can be a collaborator, but human-to-human connection is unique.

Example: When you talk with AI sure it has a wealth of knowledge but it doesn’t have a perspective. Its context is based on what you information you fed it - not a cool film it saw ast night or what it ate for breakfast. Humans brings so much more than AI can.

Focus on Storytelling (Share Your Unique Perspective):

  • Why: AI can generate narratives, but it lacks lived experiences, personal history, and genuine emotion. Your unique story, your individual lens on the world, is an invaluable asset. Sharing your authentic perspective creates connection and meaning that AI-generated content often lacks.

Let Your Feelings Guide You:

  • Why: Our emotions, intuition, and subconscious insights are powerful drivers of creative work. AI operates on logic and data, not feeling. Tapping into your emotional landscape allows you to create work that resonates deeply, evokes empathy, and moves people in ways algorithms haven’t (yet) mastered.

Example: AI generated images don’t have any meaning. Human art comes from the subconscious, its driven by emotions mood and thoughts. AI work is just meaningless pixels.

Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity:

  • Why: The creative process is inherently iterative and often involves missteps. While AI can be optimized for "correct" outputs, true growth comes from experimenting, failing, and learning from those failures. This resilience and adaptability are key to navigating the uncertainties of a changing creative landscape.

Stay Curious & Never Stop Learning (Control Your Creative Input):

  • Why: The world, and AI with it, is constantly evolving. A curious mind is an active mind, always seeking new knowledge, skills, and inspiration. By consciously curating what you consume and learn, you feed your creative engine and stay ahead of the curve, ensuring you're leading the way and creating new possibilities.

Creativity is a Source of Joy and Fulfillment:

  • Why it's crucial: Beyond its economic value, creativity is fundamental to happiness and well-being. In an age where AI may automate many routine tasks, engaging in creative pursuits offers a sense of purpose, joy, and connection. It's a way to express yourself and live a more fulfilling life.

I'd love to hear what you think are the important skils and traits in the age of AI?

Today's email is different. When I saw Marco Van Der Vlag was vibe coding an After Effects rival and it could render 1000s of layers in real time in the browser – I knew it was a story worth investigating. And it was. As with every podcast, I came away with one big shift that changed the way I think (more on that later). Watch it, and I´m sure you´d have your own takeaway. Before I tell you mine, we need to go back a few months. I am ashamed to say I recorded a podcast 6 months ago, and I...

Its been a while but Im back because now really feels like an inflexion point for AI. AI Psychosis There are two types of psychosis. The clinical kind — where you lose contact with reality. And the kind I'm watching spread through the creative industry right now. I'm talking about the guy who can't sleep because his AI agent isn't running tasks overnight. The freelancer who won't take a lunch break because that's tokens left on the table. The developper refreshing his usage dashboard like...
